Project by STEM: STEM Roots
11 – 12 years old
“STEM Roots” is an innovative STEM program that bridges the educational process with practical applications in everyday life, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices. Through the construction of hydroponic systems and hands-on automation activities, students not only learn about hydroponics technology, but also about its direct application to water conservation and efficient resource management.
The program emphasizes practical skills in building and maintaining a hydroponic greenhouse, using IoT technology, for real-time monitoring and implementing electronic systems for automated plant care. Through these activities, students gain a deep understanding of sustainable agriculture, the integration of technology in agriculture and the broader implications of environmental management during cultivation.
Objectives of the program:
By the end of the program, students will be able to:
✔ Understanding Sustainable Agriculture through Hydroponics: Students will explore how hydroponic systems function and their role in sustainable food production, learning how these systems can reduce resource use and environmental impact..
✔Applied Physics in Agriculture: They will deepen their understanding of physical quantities—such as light, temperature, humidity, and water flow—and how these factors influence plant growth and ecosystem balance.
✔ Introduction to Hydroponic Systems and Technology: Students will assemble and operate hydroponic setups, gaining hands-on experience in nutrient management, water circulation, and plant monitoring.
✔ Climate Impact Assessment in Agriculture: They will learn to evaluate the influence of climate variables (temperature, humidity, light intensity, CO₂ levels) on plant growth and agricultural productivity.
✔ Connecting Science, Technology, and the Environment: Students will understand how scientific principles and technological innovations can be applied to promote environmental sustainability and smart farming practices.
✔ Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving in Modern Agriculture: They will develop analytical and creative skills to address challenges related to climate change, resource management, and sustainable food systems.
✔ IoT and Environmental Data Analysis: Students will collect, process, and analyze environmental data using IoT sensors and cloud-based tools to optimize plant growth conditions and monitor system performance.
✔ Innovation and Practical Application of STEM Concepts: They will be encouraged to apply STEM knowledge creatively to design, test, and improve real-world hydroponic and sustainable agriculture solutions.
